The event, held at the UB Faculty of Biology, included a lecture by the American ecologist Robert E. Ricklefs, winner of the Ramon Margalef Ecology Award 2015. This prize, established in honour of the Catalan scientist, is promoted by the Generalitat (Autonomous Government) of Catalonia to recognize those people from all over the world who have distinguished themselves in an exceptional way in the world of ecology.
The scientific conference was completed with the presentation of the book Ramon Margalef, ecólogo de la biosfera [Ramon Margalef, ecologist of the biosphere]. This work, published on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of his death, reviews the scientific biography of Ramon Margalef (1919-2004), University of Barcelona Emeritus Professor and one of the world's most productive and cited scientists in the sphere of ecology. The book counted on the collaboration of the Agbar Foundation. Indeed, in the 1960s, Ramon Margalef collaborated with the magazine Agua, published by a predecessor of the Foundation. Several studies published in this magazine allowed Aigües de Barcelona to be one of the first companies to incorporate biological indicators into the assessment of water contamination.
Presentation of the book in the Ágora Agbar
The Agbar Foundation, which sponsored the scientific biography of Ramon Margalef, will pay tribute to the Catalan ecologist on the coming Thursday 12 November starting at 12.30 hours in the Ágora Agbar. The event will include the participation of Agbar’s Executive Chairman, Angel Simón, the Rector of the UB, Dídac Ramírez, and the authors of the book, among others.
