Aigües de Barcelona joins the energy poverty programme of Barcelona Metropolitan Area

The Director General of Aigües de Barcelona, Ignacio Escudero, and the Executive Vice-President of the AMB and Mayor of Cornellà, Antonio Balmón, signed the commitment to join the programme yesterday. Ignacio Escudero noted the importance of the agreement signed: "At these difficult times we need to be sensitive to the social reality. For Aigües de Barcelona, this programme is one more step in our social commitment to the people who need it the most", he indicated.

By virtue of this agreement, Aigües de Barcelona undertakes not to cut off the supply to bad debtors with an energy poverty profile, and to manage these procedures with its own personnel while the municipal social services process and assess, case by case and in accordance with the guidelines established with the metropolitan body, the payment of the overdue bills through the AMB fund.

This programme supplements the subsidies of the Agbar Foundation’s Solidarity Fund, created in 2012 to subsidize the payment of the water consumption of all families with difficulties. At today’s date, over 30,000 subsidies have been granted, representing a cost of over €1.7m.

The fund created by the AMB has been allocated €5m, which will be channelled through the social services of the town councils. So that the aid reaches the citizens immediately, the AMB will bear the debt of the unpaid energy and water supplies from 2014, at an expected cost of €1m.
