Father Josep M. Soler, Abbot of Montserrat, participated at midday today in a new edition of the Water Circle. In the talk, entitled “Toward shared values in a globalized world”, the Abbot of Montserrat requested work to find “shared and universal ethical values which defend the dignity of human beings and respect for cultural and social diversity”. In this respect, he asked for “consensual political commitments”, and the involvement of schools, families, social partners and the media, “to tackle the challenges of the current globalized world from an ethical viewpoint”.
In relation to the present-day world he censored, in line with Pope Frances, “the lack of ethics of financial capitalism, which multiplies social exclusion and governs in the name of the people”. Therefore, “we need to place the human being, not money, at the centre of the economy”, and he requested a financial reform “with ethical values”, which places money “at the service of people”. He moreover showed his support for the reforms of Pope Frances to make the Vatican more transparent and committed, at the service of the men and women of our time.
Father Josep M. Soler also expressed his support for the consultation of 9 November, and in answer to a question raised in the discussion following the talk, he insisted on saying that, in a possible independent state, Catalonia “should maintain its solidarity with the peoples with which it has strong historical and family links”.
The event was presented by Agbar’s Executive Chairman, Angel Simón, who stressed the commitment of the Abbot of Montserrat to human rights and social justice, “as demonstrated in difficult times such as the Franco regime”. He moreover advocated values of Christianity such as “dialogue, cooperation and coexistence”, which in his opinion are essential to encourage respect between the world’s different cultures and identities.
New editions of the Water Circle are planned for this year. The next one will be in the autumn, with the presence of David López Salido, Deputy Associate Director of the United States Federal Reserve. Agreement with the Abbey of Montserrat Foundation
Coinciding with the participation of Father Josep M. Soler in today’s Water Circle, the Agbar Foundation signed an agreement with the Abbey of Montserrat 2025 Foundation to encourage and promote the activity of the Escolanía de Montserrat choir. By virtue of this agreement, once a year the Agbar Foundation will organize a concert by the Escolanía de Montserrat choir in the Palau de la Música Catalana.
