Ignacio Escudero, Director General of Aigües de Barcelona, and Àngels Guiteras Mestres, in representation of the Welfare and Development Association (ABD), signed a collaboration agreement this Wednesday which will allow a discount to be offered on the water service for the families in a situation of economic vulnerability and at risk of social exclusion who live in the social housing managed by this third social sector organization.
The signing of this agreement forms part of the overall actions that the Agbar Foundation has established since the creation of the Solidarity Fund in 2012, which offers a discount on the payment of water for the most socially and economically vulnerable families.
The Solidarity Fund arose from the observation of the social reality which emerged from the change of economic cycle that began at the end of 2007, and which represented a drop in family income and a subsequent impoverishment of numerous families.
Since this fund was set up, the Agbar Foundation has granted over 76,000 subsidies, which have benefited 14,888 families.
Prior collaboration with the ABD
This is not the first time that Aigües de Barcelona has offered ABD support and, indeed, the signing of this agreement is the result of the collaboration which began months ago with this third social sector organization.
The origin of the current agreement is a pilot test which was coordinated by ABD and promoted by Barcelona City Council, in which Aigües de Barcelona collaborated on the training of 100 energy agents who intervened in over 3,000 families in a situation of energy poverty in order to help them to be more energy efficient, and thus be able to reduce their consumption of water and energy.
Other similar agreements
It is worth mentioning that the Agbar Foundation previously signed similar agreements with other third social sector organizations, with the aim of offering a discount on the water bill for social housing. This plan forms part of the agreements signed with the Mambré Foundation and the Hàbitat3 Foundation.
