Cáritas Diocesana de Barcelona recognizes the Agbar Foundation as an Entity with a Heart thanks to its social work

The ceremony took place this morning to hand over the recognition plaque of Cáritas Diocesana de Barcelona’s Entities with a Heart to the Agbar Foundation, in recognition of its Solidarity Fund, through which over 14,500 families have received discounts on their water service for a sum of more than €4.3m.

Montserrat Padilla and Ferran Porta, Secretary General and volunteer, respectively, of Cáritas Diocesana de Barcelona’s Entities with a Heart programme, were in charge of handing over Entities with a Heart’s recognition plaque to Ignacio Escudero, Managing Trustee of the Agbar Foundation and Director General of Aigües de Barcelona, in appreciation of the Agbar Foundation’s work carried out over recent years.

In 2015, the Agbar Foundation renewed for a further year the agreement with Cáritas Diocesana de Barcelona to give support to the families received by this charitable institution with difficulties to pay the water bill. These users live in the institution’s social housing for rent managed by the Foment de l’Habitatge Social Foundation, and in the shared flats of Cáritas Diocesana de Barcelona. In the more than three years of collaboration, the Agbar Foundation has granted this aid to over 1,700 people received by Cáritas Diocesana.

By virtue of this agreement, the Agbar Foundation applies a discount on the service fee and the water consumption valued at €57, at a rate of a maximum of €28.5 per bill. This aid is renewable; families can receive it whenever they need it. The aim of the aid is to provide the most vulnerable groups with access to basic water consumption, estimated at 100 litres per person and day by the World Health Organization.

Since it was set up in 2012, the Solidarity Fund has granted around 74,000 subsidies, which have benefited over 14,500 families for a sum of over €4.3m. This aid is managed in coordination with the social services of the municipalities of the metropolitan area supplied by Aigües de Barcelona, and through Red Cross Catalonia, Cáritas Diocesana, Fundació Hàbitat3, the Fundació de l’Esperança of Obra Social La Caixa and Fundació Mambré, with the aim of offering a discount on the water service for the people received by these charitable institutions.
