Since 1961, the Agbar Foundation has been using Agbar’s knowledge to improve the quality of life of people and the environment.
The Agbar Foundation was created in 1961 as the Water Studies and Research Centre by the company Sociedad General de Aguas de Barcelona and others like it, such as Empresa de Aguas del Río Besós and Compañía Industrial del Llobregat, with the participation of Sociedad Civil de Empresas Suministradoras de Agua. In 1998, Sociedad General de Aguas de Barcelona took over its management, changing its name to the Agbar Foundation.
The mission of the first Studies Centre was to study problems related to water and the water industry through different lines of work:
The Studies Centre continued to publish the magazine of the Barcelona General Water Company, Agua, which included scientific and literary contributions, reported on the activities of similar centres in other countries and provided all kinds of water-related news from Spanish cities and around the world.
The Agbar Foundation wants to continue to carry out its activity using Agbar’s knowledge to improve quality of life and maintain a social commitment to people and the environment. For this, it promotes and acts along three lines:
